If you've signed up to a South African bookmaker, you've probably been asked to "FICA" your account before withdrawing. Here's what that actually means and why it's required.
What FICA is
FICA is the Financial Intelligence Centre Act, South African legislation aimed at preventing money laundering and the financing of terrorism. It requires financial services providers, including licensed bookmakers, to verify the identity of their customers. "FICA-ing" your account just means completing that verification.
What you'll typically need to submit
Requirements vary slightly by operator, but generally include:
- A green barcoded ID book, Smart ID card, or valid passport.
- Proof of residential address dated within the last 3 months, such as a utility bill or bank statement.
- For larger withdrawals, some operators may also request proof of income or source of funds.
When it's required
Most bookmakers let you register and deposit before verifying, but will hold your first withdrawal until FICA documents are submitted and approved. A few require it upfront before you can deposit at all. Submitting your documents as soon as you register, rather than waiting until you want to withdraw, avoids delays later.
How long it takes
Turnaround varies by operator, from a few hours to a couple of business days for manual review. Clear, well-lit photos or scans of full, uncropped documents are the single biggest factor in getting approved quickly on the first attempt.
