How Betting Bonuses Work

Deposit matches, free bets and no-deposit offers explained, and why the advertised number is only half the story.

Almost every South African bookmaker offers some form of welcome bonus, but they're not all structured the same way. Knowing the difference makes it much easier to compare offers properly.

The main bonus types

South African welcome offers usually fall into one of a few categories:

  • Deposit match: the bookmaker matches a percentage of your first deposit, for example a 100% match up to R5,000, as bonus funds.
  • Free bet: a fixed-value bet credited to your account, often alongside a smaller deposit match.
  • No-deposit bonus: bonus funds or free spins credited just for registering and verifying your account, no deposit required.
  • Free spins: a set number of spins on selected slot games, usually with a maximum win cap.

Why the headline number isn't the full picture

A bonus isn't real money you can withdraw immediately. Almost all of them carry a wagering (rollover) requirement, meaning you need to bet the bonus amount a set number of times before any winnings become withdrawable. See our dedicated guide on what rollover means for a worked example.

Most offers also come with a minimum odds requirement for sports bets, a maximum bet size while wagering, and an expiry window, typically somewhere between 7 and 30 days.

How to compare offers properly

Look at the rollover multiplier and minimum odds requirement side by side with the headline value. A R1,000 bonus at 3x rollover is usually easier to actually clear and withdraw than a R5,000 bonus at 40x. Always read the full terms on the operator's own site before you claim anything, they're the source of truth, not any comparison site including this one.
